Tesla vs. gas car for Uber in Orange County: the weekly math
Every assumption is shown so you can swap in your own numbers. Nothing here is a promise of earnings.
Most of the "EVs are cheaper" arguments online skip the part that matters to a rideshare driver: what does a week actually cost, side by side, in Orange County prices? Here's the arithmetic for a full-time driver doing 40 hours a week.
Start with miles, not hours
A working rideshare hour in OC is about 18 miles once you include driving to the next pickup. 40 hours × 18 = 720 miles a week. Full-timers pushing 50–55 hours land closer to 1,000.
What 720 miles costs in gas
A typical rideshare sedan (Camry, Accord, Altima, a non-hybrid Prius-class car) averages about 28 mpg in city driving. 720 ÷ 28 = 25.7 gallons. At $4.90 a gallon — plug in today's price at your station — that's about $126 a week, or roughly $545 a month, just in fuel.
What the same miles cost in a Tesla
A Model 3 uses about 250 watt-hours per mile in mixed driving, so 720 miles is about 180 kWh a week. What that costs depends entirely on where you plug in:

Across our fleet, charging averages about $20 per 500 miles — roughly $29 for a 720-mile week, or under a quarter of the gas bill. Even if you Supercharge at peak every time you're still around half. Over a year of full-time driving that difference is $2,000–5,000.
The part people forget: the car payment
The gas savings are real but they're not the biggest number. The biggest number is what the car itself costs you each week. A financed used sedan runs $90–130 a week in loan payment, plus your own maintenance, tires, brakes and registration. Renting moves all of that into one flat number.

Read that honestly: if you already own a paid-off, reliable sedan, keep driving it. Renting a Tesla costs more per week than a car you own outright. Where the rental wins is when the alternative is a new loan, a car that keeps breaking, or no car at all — and when the Tesla's higher ratings, Comfort-tier eligibility and lower fuel cost narrow the gap.
Where the Tesla earns it back
- Comfort and premium tiers. Model 3 and Model Y qualify for Uber Comfort, which pays more per mile than UberX. A quiet, clean car also tends to rate and tip better.
- No downtime. Maintenance is on us. A week your own car is in the shop is a week of zero income.
- No long-term debt. One-month minimum, then week to week. If you stop driving, you hand the keys back — there's no loan following you.
